Conveying the importance of coexistence between humans and wildlife, to the next generation

The sense of biophilia develops stronger in an individual when environmental education is held at a young age. Kumamori conducts environmental education both outdoors and indoors, through looking, listening, and feeling, to help children build memorable ideas that could lead to their future.

Results in 2023:

Environmental education at 17 elementary schools, junior high schools, nursery schools, and children’s clubs were held in 2023. In addition, Kumamori gave a special lecture at the Amagasaki City Teachers Union, where we reported on our activities as a local group.

“To protect the rich forests where bears live”

By learning about the workings of nature, where humans cannot survive unless they preserve forests and coexist with all living things, and the wonderful ways our ancestors coexisted with nature, we will think together about what humanity, which is heading towards extinction, should do now.

Past activities

23 years of continuous implementation K Elementary School, Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture

A proposal by an elementary school teacher was passed at a staff meeting to have the energetic Kumamori Youth Group, who actually go deep into the mountains and do activities, give a class on forests and wild animals once a year. Since then, a business program for first through sixth graders has been launched, and the young people, mainly university students from Kumamori, will be giving the classes. The children remember very well what they were taught a year ago, and look forward to the annual Kumamori class.

11th consecutive year of implementation First-year students at Tokyo University of Education High School

How can we teach high school students in Tokyo about the importance of forests? The teachers thought about taking the new students to a forest in Nagano Prefecture to actually experience the forest and get them involved in forest maintenance. But how could they get the students interested? They had them read the Kumamori booklet “Bears, Forests and People” and listen to the chairman’s speech. The high school students’ motivation rose instantly. Since then, the program has been held continuously.
